Congratulations to Coach
Dave Underwood in his 100th career victory as Varsity Head Coach for the Wheaton Academy Girls' Soccer Team last night, against SCC opponent, Chicago Christian!
The Wheaton Academy Warriors lit up the scoreboard early against the Knights, when
Abby Olson notched her first goal of the season in the fifth minute. The Warriors struck again in the fifteenth minute when Olson found sophomore Gabi LaMantia just outside the box. LaMantia's low, blistering shot beat Chicago Christian goal keeper, Tammy Mels, inside the near post. LaMantia returned the favor when she assisted Olson in the thirty-first minute for her second goal.
Julia Della Torre rounded out the first half scoring in the thirty-sixth minute.Â
In the second half, the Warriors picked up where they left off.
Jamie Netzley scored in the forty-fifth minute and assisted freshman
Gretchen Pearson (62nd minute) on her first goal in a Warrior uniform. Senior
Eaden Bond capped off the scoring for the day in the 72n minute when she scored off an
Abby Olson corner kick. While the offense was clicking, the defense was solid as well, preventing the Knights from getting a single shot. "We were really pleased with our play for our first game of the season," commented Coach Underwood. "We were pleasantly surprised with how sharp we were today. We held possession of the ball extremely well, and we were pretty creative with our attack, which was not a strong suit for us last year.
Abby Olson was outstanding today, scoring twice and assisting on two other goals. I think she has set a good tone for us as we move forward, which is exactly what you would hope for from a senior leader."Â
The Warriors return to action on Wednesday, March 19, to West Aurora to take on the Blackhawks.Â
