Girls Soccer Strikes Early, Earns Third Place Finish

PALATINE, Ill. (June 19, 2021) - Competing in their third IHSA State Tournament in the past five seasons played, the Wheaton Academy girls soccer team faced off against downstate rival Quincy Notre Dame in the 1A Third Place game. The Warriors used an early goal and never looked back to win 6-1.

Just four minutes into the game, Sarah Vander Klok scored off of a blocked shot to give Wheaton Academy a 1-0 lead. Adding to that lead was Amy Alexander three minutes later. After the Raiders answered with a goal of their own, Kelly Bickhart found Emily Setran for the goal to give the Warriors room to breathe. To close out the first half, Bickhart capitalized on a free-kick to give Wheaton Academy a 4-1 lead heading into the break.

In the 51st minute, Setran found the back of the net to increase the Warriors lead. Emma Van Wagner got in on the action by posting her first goal of the game in the 74th minute. In goal, Sara Swoboda recorded five saves while Brooke Hermes had one save to propel the Warriors to a 6-1 victory.

Wheaton Academy finished Maria Selvaggio '06's first full season 19-5, including a 13-1 record at home. On their way to the State Tournament, the Warriors earned Sectional and Super-Sectional titles, the seventh in program history.
