Spring Sports Recap (4/4-4/9)

April 11th, 2022-

Girls Soccer: Coming off of Spring Break the WA girls soccer team immediately jumped back into play when they traveled to cross-town rival West Chicago Monday night. Despite dominating much of the play the Warriors couldn't find a way through as the game finished 0-0. Sara Swoboda picked up her second shutout of the season in goal. The girls returned to action Thursday night when they took on MSC opponent Riverside Brookfield. The Warriors struck first in half number one when Emily Setran converted on a pass from Katelyn Schoepke. The Bulldogs were able to equalize right before the half bringing the score to 1-1. After a scoreless second half and two scoreless 10 minute overtime periods the game proceeded to penalty kicks. Four out of five Warriors converted from the spot including Emily Setra, Anna Africa, Eva DeSouza, and Jill Paulson. With RB putting two shots wide the Warriors won the shootout 4-3 and got a crucial conference win. The win improves the Warrior's record to 3-2-1. Following Thursday's thrilling win the Warriors entered the Body Armor Series for a two-day, two-game event. Saturday the Warriors took on Althoff Catholic in a rematch of last year's 1A State Semi-Final. Saturday wasn't WA's day as Althoff ran away to a 5-0 victory. Looking to bounce back, the girls took on Jones College Prep Sunday afternoon. Emily Setran opened the scoring in the 20th minute giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead but four unanswered goals from Jones put the Warriors in a hole they couldn't dig out of. Setran converted a late PK to finish the game with a 4-2 scoreline. The two weekend losses drop the girl's record to 3-4-1. They return to conference play Tuesday (4/12) when they travel to Rosary.

Baseball: It was a busy week for Wheaton Academy baseball who played 4 games in 6 days. The week started with a matchup with Yorkville Christian. After running out of daylight the umpire called the game after 6 innings with the score tied 6-6. Junior Andy Roman led the way by going 2-3 with a double, a home run with 3 RBIs, and 2 runs scored. Grant Rojek threw three shutout innings to finish the game. After a frustrating draw, the Warriors returned the next day to take on Harvest Christian. With the game close for much of the game, Harvest Christian pulled away late leading to a 10-4 win. The next day, after the weather forced what was supposed to be a Timothy Christian home game to neutral site Wheaton College, the Warriors dropped another close one, losing by a score of 8-7. The schools were set to play again on Friday but poor weather forced a cancellation. The Warriors returned home Saturday afternoon looking to bounce back after a tough week and they did just that as they took down Chicago Hope Academy 2-0. The Warriors threw three pitchers (York, Manusos, and Lechner) allowing 0 runs and striking out 8. Lechner received the win finishing the game by pitching the final two innings. At the plate, Hudson Williams led the Warriors going 1-3 with a HR that put the Warriors up 1-0. The four-game week sees WA's record improve to 4-6-2 on the season. The Warriors are back in action Monday at home for their conference-opening game against Riverside Brookfield.

Softball: After inclement weather pushed back opening day several weeks the softball team finally took to the field on Tuesday when they hosted Elmwood Park. The softball program, playing a JV-only schedule in 2022, has shown great improvement over the last year. No more evident by the 10 runs they scored on Tuesday afternoon. While the Warrior's bats were hot the Tigers were hotter as they dropped the game by a score of 16-10. On the mound, Ava Amato pitched two strong innings allowing only two runs in a strong outing for the Warriors. At the plate, the Warriors were led by Audrey Lopatka who's triple scored several runs. Defensively, both Gabi Mitchelll and Annie Claussen made great catches to save more Elmwood Park runs. The girls return to action Thursday (4/14) when they host Timothy Christian.

Boys Tennis: In their lone match of the week the boy's tennis team took on Oswego East High School. Varsity took to the road and traveled to Oswego and picked up wins in both singles matches. Jeremy Kang won in straight sets 6-3, 6-0, as well as Jeffrey Master, won 6-0 and 6-2. The Warriors dropped the 1 and 2 doubles leaving it up to all-freshman doubles team Will Sias and Eddie Dykema to break the tie. After losing the first set 4-6, they bounced back to win 6-4 in the second set. Going to a tie-breaking 3rd set the boys pulled out a clutch win taking the 3rd set by a score of 11-9. Due to many cancellations, this was only the second match of the season for the Warriors but it sees their record improve to 1-1. They return to action Monday vs Waubonsie Valley.

Boys Volleyball: Following some time off for Spring Break the boy's volleyball team returned to open their season against conference opponent Ridgewood on Tuesday. The game was never in doubt as the Warriors jumped on Rebels early winning the first set 25-8 and following it up with a 25-13 second set victory. The win gives the Warriors a 1-0 record on the young season. Following Tuesday's win, the boys hosted crosstown rival West Chicago on Thursday. The Warriors pulled out the win in a tightly contested first set 25-22 and followed it up with a 25-16 second set win. The win was the second of the season for the Warriors and improves their record to 2-0. They return to action Monday when they host Marmion.

Track and Field: Last night the boy's track team competed at Marmion High School.  Both the varsity and F/S teams took 3rd place overall.  Individually, Jake Figurski won the shot put event, Sheldon Powell doubled up winning the 3200 (10:18) and 1600m runs (4:54), and Canyon Roberts won both the 110 and 300m hurdle events.  On the relay side of things, the 4x800 team finished 2nd overall, running a 9:13, with Josh Strzalka and Silas Schroeder both running legs of 2:16.  Josiah Pitts had a strong showing in the 400m dash, finishing 2nd overall.  The boys will be in action next Tuesday at Marmion and Thursday at Naperville North. Meanwhile, the girl's track team hosted Rosary in a non-conference duel. It was a successful meet that provided the girls with a good tune-up for their two meet weeks coming up. Tuesday (4/12) they travel to Westmont and Thursday (4/14) they travel to Yorkville High School.

Lacrosse: WA boys lacrosse put their undefeated record on the line Tuesday night when they took on Waubonsie Valley High School. The Warriors jumped all over Waubonsie early and often led by Junior Noah Miller's team-leading 5 goals. Tyler Sommer, Liam White, and Zeke Merchant each had two goals apiece while Charlie Foley chipped in a goal and 3 assists of his own as the final score ended 16-1. The win pushes the Warrior's record to 4-0. On Saturday morning the Warriors welcomed Brother Rice High School from Detroit, MI. They kept the momentum going from Tuesday as they would run away to a 20-1 win. Sophomore Liam White stuffed the stat sheet with 4 goals and 3 assists, while Davis Schneider contributed 4 goals and an assist of his own. In the face-off circle, Jake Sommer led the way winning 8 of 11 faceoffs. The win brings the Warriors to 5-0 on the season. They return to action Monday night (4/11) when they host Huntley.
