The Wheaton Academy Warriors suffered their first loss of the season, falling 31-21 to the Bulldogs of Riverside Brookfield. The hard-fought game came down to the 4th quarter, but the Warriors ultimately came up short. They move to 4-1 on the season while Riverside Brookfield kept their perfect record at 5-0.
Riverside Brookfield opened the scoring on a long TD drive to take a 7-0 lead. Wheaton Academy answered early in the second quarter on a
David Thrasher 5-yard touchdown pass to
Steven Sellers. RB responded with another touchdown drive capped by a tipped-ball touchdown pass to take a 14-7 lead. The Warriors responded once again, this time on a 28-yard TD strike to
Harrison Taylor from Thrasher. After a Warrior fumble gave the Bulldogs good field position, RB kicked a field goal before halftime to take a 17-14 lead into the half.
RB came out and scored right away in the beginning of the third on a 44-yard TD run. The Warriors kept fighting and responded with a other long touchdown connection between Thrasher and Taylor, this time for a 53-yard touchdown. Wheaon Academy had the ball in the fourth quarter with a chance to score and take the lead, but were unable to convert a 4th down opportunity, and RB marched down the field to score and seal the 31-21 victory.
Wheaton Academy accumulated 291 yards of total offense, 227 in the air and 64 on the ground.
David Thrasher completed 12 of 27 passes for 227 yards and 3 TDs.
Harrison Taylor was the leading receiver, catching 2 passes for 81 yards and 2 TDs.
Luke Manske had 4 catches for 61 yards, and
Steven Sellers caught 5 passes for 47 yards and 1 TD.
Chase Martin carried the ball 12 times for 50 yards.
On defense, the Warriors were lead by Martin and his 14 tackles.
Nathan Meade chipped in 11 tackles, and
Mitch Brunner had 8 tackles with 2 sacks, 2 tackles for loss, and 1 pass break up.
Next week, Wheaton Academy hosts Glenbard South in a homecoming game on Saturtday. Kickoff is at 1:00 PM.
