The Wheaton Academy Warriors lost a close conference matchup against the Bulldogs of Riverside Brookfield on Friday night by a score of 20-17. The back and forth game saw several lead changes and ended with a tough loss for the Warriors.
Wheaton Academy scored on the opening drive of the game on a
Jayson Rucker 28-yard touchdown run. Riverside Brookfield answered in the second quarter with a 42-yd touchdown run with the running back breaking several tackles on the score. RB would score again two series later on a 57-yard touchdown pass. A missed extra point made the score 13-7. The Warriors were able to move the ball down the field before halftime, and Lars Cassel converted a 30-yard field goal to make the game 13-10 at halftime.
In the second half, the Warriors regained the lead on a 25-yard touchdown pass from
David Dorn to
Jayson Rucker. Rucker made an unbelievable one-handed grab for the touchdown. The Warriors were unable to hold the lead as RB scored on a 20 yard touchdown run where there were many broken tackles once again. The Warriors made a late push on the last drive of the game but came up short, failing to get into field goal range to attempt to tie the game.
The loss moves the Warriors' record to 4-4. Next week Wheaton Academy hosts Aurora Christian in a must-win game. Both teams will be 4-4, needing a win to make the playoffs. Kickoff is at 7:15 PM.
