Winter Sports Recap (11/29-12/4)

Wrestling:

12/1 Walther Christian Academy/Lisle Triangle: The Wheaton Academy wrestling team hosted their first matches of the year on Wednesday when they took on Walther Chrstian Academy and Lisle. Against Walther WA got pins from Will Anliker, Hunter Kazmierczak, and George Truitt who pinned his opponent in just six seconds. Behind those three WA defeated Walther Luther 58-18 to improve to 4-0 on the season. The match against Lisle was much closer as WA got pins from Will Hupke, Will Anliker, Caden Smith, and Hunter Kazmierczak to narrowly beat Lisle 39-36. The win pushes WA to 5-0 on the season.

 

12/2 vs Aurora Christian/Elmwood Park: The wrestling team opened conference play on Thursday when they hosted Aurora Christian and Elmwood Park in an MSC battle. Peter Johanik got the only pin on the day for the Warriors as he pinned his opponent in just 49 seconds. Multiple forfeits on the Aurora Christian side kept things close but ultimately WA fell by a score of 48-36. In their second match against Elmwood Park WA got several pins on their way to a blowout victory. Daniel Kersey, Will Anliker, Caden Smith, Peter Johanik, and George Truitt all pinned their opponents to help lead WA to the 60-18 victory. The split on the day sees the Warriors record improve to 6-1 on the season. They return to action next Thursday when they travel to Riverside Brookfield for a conference triangle with Riverside Brookfield and IC Prep.



 

Girls Basketball:

12/2 vs Timothy Christian: WA girls basketball opened up conference play on Thursday when they hosted Timothy Christian. A tightly contested first half saw TC take a two point lead into the half. Coming out of halftime the girls were held to just two third quarter points as TC would extend their lead to double digits entering the final frame. The girls battled hard in the fourth quarter but couldn't close the gap and ended up falling by a score of 40-30. The loss is the first of the season for the Warriors.  Their record now stands at 4-1 and 0-1 in conference play. Freshman Lexi Rojek and Abby Schroeder led the way with 9 points a piece. Junior Jill Paulson also chipped in 8 of her own. The girls return to action Tuesday night when they host Westmont.


Boys Basketball:

12/4 vs Timothy Christian: Wheaton Academy Boys Basketball opened MSC Conference play on Saturday night when they hosted Timothy Christian. A closely played first half saw Timothy take a three point lead into the halftime break. The Warrior defense had a strong third quarter as they held the Trojans to just five points giving them a 41-34 lead entering the final frame. A fourth quarter run would see Timothy take a late lead. After a back and forth final few minutes WA's game winning three point attempt fell short and Timothy held on for a 50-49 win. Senior Cole Andrews led the way with 19 points. Senior Sam Anderson joined Andrews in double digits with 10 points of his own. The loss drops the Warriors to 2-3. They return to action Monday night at home against Christ The King.
